Rural water funding welcomed

Over €6 million was allocated to the county’s rural water programme in recent days, a fact welcomed by local Fianna Fail TDs Michael Finneran and John Ellis.             €5,100,000 was allocated for new water treatment plants for group water schemes, while €100,000 was set aside for the take-over of group water schemes by the local authority. €600,000 was allocated for new group water schemes and the upgrading of existing schemes and €850,000 was allocated for small public water and sewerage schemes.             A total amount of €142 million will be spent this year on rural water supplies – an increase of nine percent on last year, and a 12 percent increase on the investment in rural water in 1997.
