All-Ireland SFC (Group 3)
Roscommon 1-21 Sligo 1-11
Roscommon senior footballers have secured their place in the play-off stages of the All-Ireland SFC following a ten-point win against Sligo at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday.
On a scorching hot day, the first half was a turgid affair potmarked by some very poor shooting from both sides. Roscommon led by 0-7 to 0-3 by the 20th minute but a Sligo revival saw them only two behind at the break 0-8 to 0-6.
Roscommon were much better in the second half and by the 48th minute they led by 0-14 to 0-9. But against the run of play the impressive Alan Reilly scored a fine goal for Sligo in the 49th minute and the margin was down to two again.
Roscommon kicked on in the final quarter and secured victory in impressive fashion. Man of the match Enda Smith an his brother and sub Donie Smith kicked two points apiece and the crucial score came seven minutes from the end when Dylan Ruane bundled the ball home following an excellent run.
Roscommon are now top of the Group 3 table ahead of Dublin on score difference and they will face Kildare in their final group game at a neutral venue in two weeks’ time.
