The Roscommon youth darts team made history by clinching the inaugural Connaught Cup shield trophy at the Landmark Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon. The victory marks a significant milestone for the team, reflecting months of dedicated training and commitment since the launch of the new darts academy at Ballinaheglish Community Centre.
Twenty-four young players, many competing in their first major tournament, represented Roscommon with pride. In a historic moment for the county, two Roscommon teams reached the shield final, overcoming strong competition from Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Roscommon squads.
The Roscommon A team secured the title with victories over Leitrim, Mayo, and the Roscommon B team in a thrilling final. The Roscommon C team also impressed, reaching the plate final but narrowly missing out on the win.
Three academy teams competed in tough group stages, showcasing the growing strength of darts in Roscommon. The success was supported by parents, coaches, management, and enthusiastic supporters, whose encouragement was instrumental. The Roscommon women’s and men’s teams also competed admirably, highlighting the county’s depth of talent.
The event, hosted by Leitrim Darts, was praised for its excellent organisation. Roscommon Darts will host the Connaught Cup in 2027. This victory shows a bright future for Roscommon’s youth darts program and sets the stage for further achievements.
