Transition Year students in County Roscommon are being invited to put their ideas for the future of Ireland’s rail network on film as part of a new national competition.
Iarnród Éireann has launched TY on Track: The Rail2050 Short Film Competition, challenging students to answer the question: “What do young people in Ireland want rail to look like in 2050?”
Students can enter individually or in teams of up to four and must produce a short film lasting between three and five minutes.
Entries can explore subjects including technology and innovation, rural connectivity, education and employment opportunities, climate and sustainability, accessibility and the future of travel.
Films can be created using phones, animation, graphics, interviews and other creative techniques.
Iarnród Éireann said the competition was designed to give young people a voice in the future development of transport while also introducing students to career opportunities within the rail sector.
The winning entry will receive iPads, a Transition Year class trip and a trophy, while second-place entrants will receive GoPro cameras and third place will receive Creator Kits.
Schools and students must register by 5 pm on November 20, while completed films must be submitted by 5 pm on January 29, 2027.
Shortlisted entries will be invited to a showcase and awards event next April.
Iarnród Éireann has stressed that students must not film on or near railway tracks, stations, platforms, level crossings or other railway infrastructure. Any entry containing footage recorded in those areas will be disqualified.
The competition is open to Transition Year students attending post-primary schools throughout the Republic of Ireland.
