Roscommon Town sides excel

The second round of the Connacht Cup took centrestage on Sunday with seven teams from the Roscommon & District League in action in this competition. Overall it was a good day for the Roscommon & District league teams. Castlebar Town 0 Lisnamult Celtic 2 Danny Doyle’s Lisnamult Celtic travelled to Castlebar Town and came away with a great 2-0 victory to go into the next round.    The Brazilian Dida scored a brilliant goal after sixty-five minutes of play and Edmielson added an equally good goal with six minutes left to play.    Up next for Lismamult Celtic is a home tie with Sligo side Treacy Celtic. Prediction: Danny Doyle’s Lisnamult Celtic must go into this game as hot favourite after this win.    Treacy Celtic are one of Sligo’s top side, and  this will be a true cup tie, but I think Lisnamult Celtic at home will be too strong for Treacy Celtic.   Loughglynn 2 Fahy Rovers 2 (Loughglynn won 5-4 on penalties) Roscommon & District League Division 2 side Loughglynn United are through to round 3, after they knocked out the Fahy Rovers at home.    The game finished at 2-2 after extra-time and Loughglynn went on to win 5-4 on penalties.    Mark O’Brien scored twice in the second half for Loughglynn who were a goal behind at the break.   Loughglynn will play top Sligo side Abbey United at home in round three. Prediction: Loughglynn United will have to be at their very best in this game as Abbey United are one of the Sligo league’s top sides with many of their players having been on Sligo Rovers books over the years.  Hard game to call but I think this Abbey United side will be to strong for Loughglynn United this time around.  Roscommon Town 0 Cloonamahon 0 (Roscommon Town won on 4-3 on penalties 4-3) Pat Mullins’ Roscommon Town travelled to the Sligo Division 1 side Cloonamahon, and are through to round 3 following a penalty shoot-out. There were no goals in normal or extra-time and Roscommon Town won 4-3 on penalties. Prediction: Up next for Roscommon Town is an away game to Glen Celtic after this win in the cup, and with Glen going down to CB Trotters 4-0 last time out the prediction is an away win for the Town.   Cam Celtic 0 CB Trotters 4 Cam Celtic was well beaten, 4-0 at home, by former Roscommon & District League favourites CB Trotters. Ballymote 4 St. Johns Athletic 1 Not a good day for St. Johns Athletic who were beaten 4-1 away to the Sligo Premier Division side Ballymote Celtic.    Peter Keogh scored the only goal for St.  Johns Athletic.  Ballinagare 3 Ballyglass 1 Division 2 side Ballinagare had an impressive 3-1 win over the Mayo side Ballyglass at Ballinagare.    John Larkin, Emit Drury and Derek Moran scored for the winners. Ballinagare have a bye into the next round. Manor United 2 Straid & Foxford United 5  Manor Utd. were beaten 5-2 at home by the Mayo Premier side Straid & Foxford Utd.  Paddy McCormack and Alan Garvey scored for Manor United which kept them in the game until near the end. St. Johns Athletic 2 Rahara Rovers 3 When it comes to sportsmanship St. Johns Athletic’s second side are clear winners.  They were 2-0 down against Rahara Rvs. in their Division 3 game a couple of weeks ago when it was stopped due to injury. On Sunday they allowed the same Rahara players to score twice before competing! Rahara were 3-2 ahead at the end.  Premier Division Ballinasloe Town and Castlerea Celtic share the lead of the Ruby Oil Sponsored Premier Division following the weekend games. Ballinasloe Town 1 Skyvalley Rovers 0  Ballinasloe Town beat Skyvalley Rovers by a single goal at Ballinasloe.  Cloonfad United 1 Castlerea Celtic 1   Castlerea Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw away to a much-improved Cloonfad Utd.  Derek Mulhall headed Castlerea in front after fifty-six minutes of play.    John Burke got on the end of a Cormack Costello header to get an equaliser. The big game for Castlerea Celtic is Manor Rangers in the cup. Glen Celtic 1 Shiven Rovers 2 Shiven Rovers are in third place in the Premier Division thanks to a 2-1 win over Glen Celtic in Glenamaddy.  Ballymoe 0 Dysart 3     Dysart beat Ballymoe F.C. 3-0 away at Ballymoe. James Coyne opened the scoring after twenty minutes. In the closing stages of the game Jason Corbett and Keith Waldron scored again for Dysart to move them into fourth place in the points table.  Kilkerrin United 1 Moore United 3   Moore United travelled to Kilkerrin United and recorded a 3-1 win.  Athlone Nissan Division 1 Rahara Rovers had a very important win over fellow contenders Strokestown United and now join Ahascragh United and Ballinasloe Town and Strokestown Utd. at the top of the point’s table.    Ericsson F.C. moved up the table after beating Moylough 3-0 at Athlone.    Jonathan Culloty scored two and Paul Keogh one for the winners.    CP Ajax are the new leaders of the Bear an Raille sponsored Division 2 thanks to a 3-0 win over Glen Celtic at Glenamaddy.   Shiven Rovers are in third place behind Loughglynn after beating a young Skyvalley Rvs. side 5-0 at Newbridge.    In the remaining game Moore Utd. meat Ballymoe F.C. 4-1 at Ballymoe.
