Roscommon through after thriller against Cavan 

Roscommon are through to the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final after a thrilling shootout against Cavan at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park in Longford on Saturday. The key score of a high-scoring first half came in the 22nd minute when Diarmuid Murtagh’s shot for a point looped over Gary 0’Rourke and into the Cavan net. Roscommon led by 1-11 to 0-10 at half-time.

The 3,962 crowd saw a barrage of scores in the second half. Enda Smith did all the hard work for Brian Stack’s goal in the 41st minute. But Cavan were never out of the match and when Dara McVitie scored a Cavan goal in the 58th minute there was just a point between the teams. Enda Smith scored Roscommon’s third goal three minute later and it was the score that settled the contest. Smith, Diarmuid Murtagh and Brian Stack were outstanding on the day for Davy Burke’s men who will now be in action again next weekend. The draw for the preliminary quarter-finals is on Monday morning. Final score: Roscommon 3-20 Cavan 1-20
