Roscommon town has improved to 10th position in the latest litter survey by Irish Business Against Litter, while Carrick-on-Shannon finished inside the top five.
The latest IBAL survey, carried out by An Taisce, ranked 40 towns and cities across the country.
The An Taisce report described Roscommon’s result as “excellent”, with seven out of the ten sites surveyed receiving the top litter grade.
The report said Main Street was “looking very well”, with lovely paving, planter boxes and a covered seating area. Loughnaneane Park was also praised, with the report noting that the playground and PE equipment were in very good condition.
Roscommon Castle was described as “exceptionally clear of litter”, with all aspects of the visitor attraction in very good condition.
However, the report noted that the wasteland adjacent to the Recycle Bank remained the most heavily littered site surveyed in Roscommon.
Carrick-on-Shannon also received an excellent result, with seven out of the ten sites surveyed receiving the top litter grade.
The report praised Main Street, which has been recently enhanced with paving and tree planting, and described the area as spotless. The Town Clock and environs were also noted as being very attractively presented and maintained.
The most heavily littered site surveyed in Carrick-on-Shannon was the Recycle Bank at Rosebank Retail Park.
Nationally, no town or city occupied the “seriously littered” or “litter blackspot” categories. Overall litter levels were on a par with last year, with 27 towns deemed clean.
IBAL’s Conor Horgan said local authorities appear to have made progress in tackling persistently littered sites and dumping.
“As the peak season for tourist visitors approaches, we have fewer littered areas than we’ve had at any time in the last 25 years,” he said.
