“There was a good entry of stock on offer again this week with a lively trade for bullocks and good demand resulting in a good clearance of lots. Prices for bullocks ranged from €2.20 per kilo up to €2.88 per kilo. Prices for heifers averaged from €1.97 per kilo up to €2.45 per kilo. There were big numbers of dry cows on offer with all lots sold. Prices averaged from €1.41 per kilo up to €1.95 per kilo.
“This Friday (7th), the mart will host Christmas Cracker special sales for bullocks and heifers with 25 pens of bullocks and 40 pens of heifers as well as dry cows on offer.
“Numbers were slightly down at Tuesday’s weanling and suckler sale. Prices for heifers ranged from €2.34 per kilo up to €3.15 per kilo. There was a firm trade for weanling bulls with prices averaging from €2.39 per kilo to €3.50 per kilo. Cows and calves made up to €2,400. There will be a sale of weanlings next Tuesday (11th) at 5 pm and bookings will be accepted up to 5 pm today (6th).
“There were similar numbers on offer this week. Prices for finished lambs peaked at €115 for 62kgs. Store lambs fetched up to €93.50. There was an improvement in trade for cast ewes from the previous week with prices ranging from €40 up to €126. Sales continue each Wednesday at 11 am for lambs and cast ewes”.

“Numbers of stock presented for sale are starting to fall, with fewer numbers on offer in all categories of stock this past week. Trade has remained strong for the quality lots presented with the exception of dry cows, which have noticed a slip in prices in recent weeks.
“The heifer trade and weanling rings reported good clearances with good prices reported for the quality lots, while breeding stock and runners reported good demand. Cows with calves at foot made from €1,140 to €1,500 per head. Springer cows made from €980 to €1,300 per head. There were smaller numbers of calves/runners with prices ranging from €250 to €715.
“In last Monday’s bullock sale (25th), there were 200 bullocks on offer with better quality cattle presented. Demand was similar to previous weeks with a good clearance taking place.
“Sales continue at Castlerea Mart on today (Thursday, December 6th) with our usual sale of heifers, cows, salves, runners and weanlings. All sales commence at 11 am”.
