“There were good numbers on offer at last Tuesday’s weanling sale with a firm trade for both bulls and heifers. Prices for bulls averaged from €2.62 per kilo up to €3.30 per kilo. Weanling heifers prices ranged from an average of €2.61 per kilo up to €3.97 per kilo. While there was a good presence of exporters and agents, farmers were more active this week.
“There is a special sale of weanlings as well as springers and sucklers on Tuesday, April 10th at 5 pm. Bookings accepted up to 5 pm today (Thursday).
“Meanwhile, there was a larger entry of sheep at last Wednesday’s sheep sale. There was a similar trade for hoggets with prices as high as €140. We had our first entry of spring lambs with a top price of €160.
“The trade for cast ewes was on a par to the previous week with prices ranging from €80 to €130. There was plenty of ewes with lambs at foot on offer and there was a brisk trade for them.
“Sales continue each Wednesday at 11 am for lambs and cast ewes. There is a sheep scanning service every Wednesday from 9 am to 10 am”.

“There were 800 cattle on offer this week and despite the unfavourable weather conditions buyers were out in force trying to source stock.
“Weanlings in particular, both bulls and heifers, were a very strong trade with bulls making up to €3.73 a kilo and heifers making up to €3.74 a kilo. Store heifers and dry cows also reported good clearance while prices in the breeding stock rings were stronger this week with increased demand.
“Large numbers of sucks on offer this week with plainer type lots a little harder sold, while the demand for the better quality lots was similar to previous weeks.
“Cows with calves at foot made form €1140 to €1900 for a Limousin cow and her bull calf at foot. Springers made form €550 to €1710 per head and runners made form €385 to €950 per head.
“There were 140 bullocks on offer on Monday, 26th, making from €400 to €935 with their weight with an average of €688 overpaid with a good clearance reported.
“Sales continue at Castlerea Mart today (Thursday, 5th) with the usual sale of heifers, cows, calves, runners and weanlings. All sales commence at 11 am”.
