Roscommon People Junior Football ‘A’ Championship

The 2008 Roscommon Junior Football A Championship has a new format this year. Sixteen teams will compete on an all-county basis which is the first time in a number of years that the competition has been played in that format. Heretofore the competition was split into the Mid South and North West sections of the county with the winners of both divisions meeting in the county final.   This year the competition (sponsored by The Roscommon People newspaper) will be played out between four groups of four teams from all over the county that were drawn out of the hat at a county board meeting.   Several clubs will be hoping for junior football championship honours this summer. Creggs have been unlucky over the past number of years and they will be looking to go one better this year. Kilglass Gaels and Ballinameen are two teams from the north of the county that will be hoping to do well in the junior championship this year having slipped down from intermediate grade in recent seasons. St. Josephs are also a team that will be hoping that they have a decent run in this year’s championship.   The rest of the teams are second or third teams of the bigger clubs but that will make them no less competitive. The top two teams in each group will play in the quarter-finals. The county final is fixed for the 19th of October. The draw is as follows: The competition begins this weekend with a game between Creggs and Clann na nGael in Johnstown at 8 pm on Friday night.  Group A Creggs Clann na nGael St. Joseph’s  St. Brigid’s Group B Kilglass Gaels Shannon Gaels Elphin Roscommon Gaels Group C Ballinameen Strokestown Kilbride Kilmore Group D Oran St. Aidan’s Padraig Pearses Western Gaels
