Roscommon motorists urged to follow designated route to Ploughing Championships

Motorists travelling from Roscommon to the National Ploughing Championships are being advised to plan their journey carefully and avoid relying on satnav systems near the event site.

The championships are taking place at Screggan, Tullamore, from Tuesday, September 15 to Thursday, September 17, with more than 80,000 people expected to attend each day.

Traffic travelling from the west should follow the designated green route.

Drivers will be directed off the M6 at Junction 6 and towards Moate before continuing along the Ballycumber Road. From Ballycumber, traffic will join the R436 towards Clara before turning for Rahan village.

At Rahan, motorists will be directed onto the L2011 and onwards to the event site and designated green car parks.

Gardaí have warned visitors not to use satnav or other mapping applications close to Screggan, as these may not reflect the temporary traffic diversions in place. Drivers should instead follow Garda and steward directions.

A partial closure of the N52 between Tullamore and Birr is in operation, while local roads approaching Mucklagh village and the Screggan site are also subject to closures.

People not attending the championships are being asked to avoid the area where possible.

Visitors should allow at least twice the normal travelling time, carpool where possible and check the official traffic plan before beginning their journey.

The traffic restrictions will remain in operation until 8 pm on Thursday.
