Roscommon man missing in New York

Efforts were continuing as we went to press to find a Co. Roscommon carpenter who is missing in New York. "It’s like he just vanished," said his brother Martin, following the disappearance of Tony Devine (29). "We’ve put up a poster in every bar, every police station, and hopefully someone will know something," said Martin. Tony Devine, (29), who is originally from the Clashaganny/Tulsk area, was last seen in Slattery’s bar on 36th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues in Manhattan on Friday, November 30th. He had earlier been in the Galway Hooker bar, which is in the same area, with friends. Andy O’Connor, a colleague and close friend, left him in the bar about 10.30 p.m. on the Friday night. At approximately 10 pm the 29-year-old carpenter called his girlfriend, but they got cut off. He tried to call her again at approximately 11.30 p.m. but her phone was switched off. He didn’t leave a message. That was the last call made on his mobile phone. On Saturday morning about 9 am, his brother Martin called Tony’s mobile phone to invite him for breakfast, something the brothers often did. The phone was off. He didn’t take any notice until Sunday when he tried again. After speaking with his brother’s friend, Martin got slightly worried and called the police. The only identification Tony had was his Bank of America card. The card has not been used since the middle of November. A disagreement allegedly ensued between Yonkers and New York City police about jurisdiction in the case and it was Wednesday before the police investigation got underway. In the meantime, Martin Devine was checking hospitals, homeless shelters and bars throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, Yonkers and parts of New Jersey. Friends of the Devines have put up posters in the mid town area of Manhattan and a friend said that the group were getting good information. Martin and Tony Devine are the only members of their family living in the US, but Martin Devine said their parents and siblings in Ireland are "distraught over this, as you can imagine." Tony Devine was last was seen wearing jeans, construction boots, a brown Carhartt jacket and a white and blue striped shirt with a white polo shirt underneath. He is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds.
