Roscommon lose Connacht semi-final

A strong second-half display from Mayo ensured that they overcame Roscommon in a Connacht SFC semi-final played in glorious sunshine at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday. Final score: Mayo 1-15 Roscommon 0-13. Mayo began well. Aidan O’Shea scored a superb goal in the 8th minute and by the 12th minute they led by 1-2 to 0-1.

Roscommon improved after that and Diarmuid Murtagh was at his very best. He kicked four points in the first half and by half-time there was only a point in it. Mayo 1-6 Roscommon 0-8.

Roscommon levelled the scores with a Daire Cregg point just after the break but Mayo took over after that. Ryan O’Donoghue was outstanding from play and frees, and by the 60th minute they led by six points, 1-14 to 0-11. Roscommon did miss a number of chances including a great goal chance for Enda Smith in the 62nd minute.

Mayo held out to win comfortably and now they play Galway in the Connacht final on Sunday week. Roscommon will await the draw for the round robin competition.
