Following a very exciting final of the Suzuki sponsored Senior Cup Golf competition at Co. Longford Golf Club on Saturday 21st of June, Roscommon emerged victorious against a gallant Galway Golf Club. In continuous rain the golf was superb and Roscommon were worthy winners. Roscommon will go on to compete in the national finals on the 29th and 30th of August which will be held at Galway Golf Club. The Roscommon team were Sinead Benedetti, Anne McCormack, Mary Seymour, Ailbhe Farrell, Ruth Lennon, Paula Quinn and Julie O’Gara. The team was captained by Aoife Farnon and Paula Keane. Roscommon Mens Section: Club Competitions: The club mixed foursomes is now in progress and round two has to be played by the 5th July and the draw for the T.J.C. O’Keeffe Fourball which was made last week is now up on the noticeboard. The Pierce Purcell team beat Portumna by 3 games to 2 on Saturday 21st June and are now in the Connacht semi-final. The pairings for the two home legs were Michael Sharkey and Liam McNeill and Vinny Brady and Louis O’Doherty. Playing in Portumna were Albert O’Connor and Peter Geraghty, who won their match on the 23rd hole, Noel Moloney and Tom Regan and Dennis O’Brien and Michael Creaven who also had a great away win. The team captain is Robert Hill. The club Seniors were beaten by Ballaghaderreen this week. Open week commenced on Thursday 19th June and the first competition was an 18 hole singles for over 55’s, sponsored by Ollie Hannon. The winner was Seamus Mulryan with 45 points. In second place was Sergio Benedetti with 39 points. Third was Gerry Mahon with 38 points and fourth was Pearse Mellett with 37 points. The gross winner was Padraig Brennan with 27 points. Friday’s competition was an 18 hole singles sponsored by Aengus Oates of ERA Oates Auctioneers, Church Street Roscommon. The winner was Mark Cunniffe with 41 points. In second place was Eamon Collins with 40 points. Third was Sean McGahon with 40 points and fourth was William O’Doherty also with 40 points. The gross winner was Brian Feeley with 33 points. Saturday’s competition was a fourball sponsored by Michael and Rita Oates of Eight Til Late, Main Street, Roscommon. The winners were Paul Farrell and Cathal McConn with 40 points. In second place were Richard and Niall Browne with 39 points. In third place were John and Cathal Gunn with 37 points and in fourth place were visitors M.Cunningham and J.Gillespie with 34 points. The gross was won by Sean McGahon and Seamus Corcoran with 28 points. Sunday’s competition was an 18 holes singles stableford sponsored by John Earley of Earley Property Partners, The Square, Roscommon. On a wet and windy day the winner, for a second time this week, was Mark Cunniffe with 35 points. In second place was John McGrath also with 35 points. Third was visitor Ray Burke from Connemara, also with 35 points and in fourth was Padraig Dervin also with 35 points. The gross winner was Patrick Farnon with 27 points. Open week continues with competitions every day up to and including Sunday 29th June. Ladies Section: The 18 Hole competition on Tuesday the 17th June was sponsored by O’Brien’s Pharmacy and the result is:- 1st Sandra Kelly, 66 Net, 2nd Rosemary O’Brien, 66 net, Gross Paula Quinn and 3rd Mary Cunningham, 69 net. Hard luck to the Boyne Cup team who were defeated by Ardee, Co. Louth, and the Junior Foursomes team who were defeated by Boyle. Although Roscommon started three matches down they won all three matches in Roscommon but lost on the first tie hole. In the first day of Open week the competition was sponsored by Ollie Hannon and the results are:- 1st Mary Cunningham 41 points, 2nd Detta Cox 40 points, Gross Mary O’Keeffe 24 gross points, 3rd Marguerite Farrell 40 points. Saturday’s competition sponsored by Eight ‘Til Late was a fourball. The winners were Detta Cox and Teresa Browne with 36 points. In second place were June Halliday and Mary Cunningham also with 36 points and in third place were Ethel Keenan and Kate Walshe with 34 points. The gross was won by Joan Moran and Mary Mellett with 20 points. Sunday’s competition, sponsored by John Earley was won by club secretary Marina Dolan with 36 points. In second place was Kate Walshe with 33 points and in third place was Detta Cox with 33 points. The gross winner was Paula Miley with 21 points. Our Senior Cup team had great success last Saturday when winning The Western District final to qualify for the All-Ireland finals. In the semi-final we beat Longford and then in the afternoon we had a great win over Galway Golf Club. The team was Sinead Benedetti, Anne McCormack, Mary Seymour, Ailbhe Farrell, Ruth Lennon, Paula Quinn and Julie O’Gara.
