Roscommon farmers up for Bord Bia award

Michael Gunn from Strokestown has been shortlisted for Bord Bia’s Origin Green Farmer Award. The biennial awards recognise and reward the exceptional performance being achieved by members of its Sustainability Quality Assurance schemes for beef, horticulture and dairy.

Michael, who supplies Aurivo co-op, has been nominated in the ‘Large Herd’ category at the awards. He is assisted in farm operations by his wife Miriam and his parents Kevin and Eileen.

The Gunns join David Aughmuty and his family from Ballygalda on the 39-strong shortlist in meeting high standards around hygiene, farm safety, traceability, animal welfare, remedy use and commitment to their locality. David has been nominated in the ‘Weanling store to beef’ category at the awards. David, along with his son Giles, runs a mixed beef, sheep and tillage farm just outside Roscommon town.

The overall category winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at The Heritage Hotel, Killenard, Co. Laois on Wednesday, December 12th.
