Roscommon defeat Mayo in Castlebar

Roscommon scored a sensational four point win against newly crowned national football league champions Mayo in the Connacht SFC at McHale Park in Castlebar this afternoon.

Played in poor windy and wet conditions, Roscommon battled fiercely from the opening whistle and against the wind and rain they denied Mayo space and time on the ball. In the 23rd minute man of the match Enda Smith converted a penalty after a foul on Davy Murray, and when Donie Smith thumped in a rebound in the 34th minute for a second goal, it helped Roscommon into a 2-2 to 0-4 lead at the break.

It was a huge battle after the break but the Roscommon defence held firm while up the other end Diarmuid Murtagh was magnificent kicking four second half scores as Davy Burke’s men held out for a famous win. Now Roscommon face Galway in the Connacht semi-final in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday week.

Final score today Roscommon 2-8 Mayo 0-10.
