Fr. Manning Cup Roscommon 1-11 Sligo 0-7 Roscommon accounted for Sligo on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-7 in this first round Fr. Manning Cup game played at Curry, Sligo last evening (Wednesday). After all the controversy about the scrapping of the popular competition – a decision since reversed – it was a welcome winning start for Roscommon. During a scrappy and lacklustre first half corner-forward Niall Kilroy edged Roscommon into an early ascendancy with front glorious points. The Rossies fully deserved to lead by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time. A goal by number fifteen Michael Sweeney midway into the second half underlined Roscommon’s superiority and the visitors went on to win by seven points against a Sligo side who had too many score-shy forwards. Roscommon will be in Ted Webb Cup action this weekend when they face Galway County in the semi-finals of the competition. The second semi-final will feature Leitrim v Galway City & West and the games will take place as a double bill on Friday evening in Ballyhaunis. Roscommon (v Sligo Wednesday night): N.
