Roscommon County Council Arts Office, in collaboration with Roscommon County Council Housing Department, has announced two significant public art commission opportunities under the Per Cent for Art Scheme, with a combined value of €153,000.
The commissions form part of ongoing investment in housing, placemaking and community development and will support the creation of permanent public artworks at Clúain na Coillte, Monksland and Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen.
The Council is inviting artists and artist teams from across Ireland to submit proposals that respond creatively to the unique character, history, landscape and community aspirations of each location.
The larger of the two commissions, valued at €112,500, relates to the new Clúain na Coillte social housing development in Monksland, comprising 51 homes currently under construction. The successful artist will be commissioned to design, develop and install a permanent public artwork, or suite of artworks, that will contribute to a strong sense of place, foster community identity and create a welcoming environment for new residents.
A second commission at Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen, valued at €40,500, combines a permanent public artwork with an Artist in Residence programme. Delivered in partnership with Creative Places Ballaghaderreen, the commission places socially engaged practice at its heart and will see the selected artist work closely with residents and local stakeholders as part of an ambitious regeneration project. The residency component will support collaboration, creativity and community participation, helping to shape both the process and the final artwork.
Commenting on the announcement, Áine Butler, Assistant Arts Officer, Roscommon County Council, said:
“These commissions present exciting opportunities for artists to work with communities at important moments of growth, change and renewal. Through the Per Cent for Art Scheme, we are seeking high-quality, contemporary public artworks that celebrate local identity, encourage participation and leave a lasting legacy for residents and visitors alike. We particularly welcome proposals that demonstrate meaningful engagement and innovative approaches to placemaking.”
Artists may apply for one or both commissions. Applications are welcomed from artists working across all disciplines who can demonstrate experience in creating original, high-quality public art and delivering meaningful community engagement.
The deadline for submissions is 4.00pm on Monday 7 September 2026.
