Roscommon camogie stars power past Dublin

Irish Daily Star National Camogie League Roscommon 1-6 Dublin 0-1

Roscommon’s good run in the National Camogie League continued on Sunday last with a hard-fought win against Dublin in a game played in difficult weather conditions at Knockcroghery.

Roscommon had the elements at their backs in the opening half and they dominated the exchanges – although scores were hard to come by and Roscommon were responsible for a number of bad wides. Nevertheless they were 0-5 to 0-0 ahead at half-time with Kelley Hopkins (2), Annette McGeeney (2) and a 45’ converted by Niamh Coyle providing the Roscommon scores.

The big question at the break was would a five-point margin be good enough and the answer was emphatically answered as the Roscommon defence, in which Susan Spillane was outstanding, gave the Dublin attack no space. They did a superb job restricting the Dubs to just one point, and that was a free in the 48th minute.

Niamh Coyle pointed a free for Roscommon with five minutes left and then in injury-time Roscommon scored the game’s only goal when substitute Fiona Connell shot home from close range.

Apart from the outstanding Susan Spillane, Kelley Hopkins, Joanne Beattie, Caroline Connaughton, Elaine Daly and Annette McGeeney were most prominent for an impressive home side.

Roscommon: C Connaughton; A Fallon, S Coyle, P Lennon; S Spillane, E Daly, J Beattie; K Hopkins (0-2), C Dowling; N Watson, N Coyle (0-2), R Brennan; S O’Brien, A McGeeney (0-2), A Rogerson. Subs: C Curley for Brennan, D Regan for Rogerson, F Connell (1-0), for O’Brien.
