Roscommon bow to strong Meath finish

All-Ireland Junior Camogie semi-final Roscommon 3-7 Meath 1-16 The Roscommon camogie team bowed out of this year’s Junior All-Ireland series after they put in a battling performance against Meath at Clonkill, County Westmeath on Sunday.   It was a disappointing result for the Roscommon side who had put themselves in pole position in the game on several occasions only to be over-run by a Meath team who scored 1-6 without reply in the final quarter of the contest.   It will be a case of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ for this Roscommon team in the wake of this defeat and had luck been on their side they could now be looking forward to an All-Ireland final appearance.   Three points from Meath’s Jane Dolan, Sinead Hackett and Stephanie Horan saw the Royal County race into the lead early on. However Roscommon produced an emphatic response with two goals from full-forward Clodagh Rogers along with further scores from the impressive Annette McGeeney which saw them lead at the interval by 2-3 to 0-6.   The second half promised so much for Roscommon after Kelly Hopkins bounced on a loose ball to find the net on the resumption to put the Rossies well and truly in command. But their joy was short-lived as, after trading points with Meath up until the 45 minute mark, a goal from Dearbhala O’Carroll hauled her side back into contention.   Worse was to follow for the Roscommon team as Meath turned on the style in the final quarter. Points from Horan, Donnelly and O’Carroll levelled proceedings before Dolan and Donnelly (2) yet again put the issue beyond doubt in injury-time.   A disappointing result indeed for the Roscommon team, taking into account the nature of the leads they had built up. They will learn from this defeat and will have gained valuable experience for future games but this is small consolation to the Ladies of Roscommon who will feel they could and possibly should be competing in the All-Ireland Junior Camogie Final this year.
