Kennedy Cup 2007: Tournament football in June each season mark highpoints in a player’s career. The U-13 Representative squad compete this week in the Kennedy Cup; the premier domestic underage football tournament in Ireland. The squad is the first long-term product of the League’s Academy and Emerging Talent programmes. Michael Murphy, Larry Mullins and a group of coaches initiated the Academy for U-10’s and 11’s four years ago. The frameworks locally have grown and evolved and when the FAI launched the Emerging Talent Programme the League were one of the few in the country that embraced the programme seamlessly. Aidan Hughes emerged as the manager of the squad, assisted by Michael O’Reilly and Pauleen Healy. There have been many coaching sessions, matches, trips around the country. The range of support and voluntary contribution to the programme over the years is immeasurable. The players, staff and parents are the primary people without whom nothing could have developed. The League thanks UMBRO for their main sponsorship of the squad in 2006/07. Farrells, Castlecoote and Abbey Health and Fitness sponsored two brilliant kits. Many club members and managers assisted and generally supported the programme and fundraisers. Donamon Castle and Shiven Rovers have provided facilities all the way through. The local R.D.O. John Morris-Burke has been on hand assisting from a technical perspective. Many of the referees officiated games and sessions on top of their domestic matches commitments. The final selection of players will have the experience of this tournament but many others have contributed to the squad along the way and deserve recognition. The squad: Noel Fallon (Dysart) Robert Hannon (Shiven Rovers) Shane Smyth (Ballymoe F.C.) Fintan Kelly (Castlerea Celtic) John McManus (Roscommon Town) Shane O’Reilly (Moylough ’79) Dermot Hughes (Moylough ’79) Enda Kelly (Moore Utd ) Mark Nally (Roscommon Town) Maurice Connaughton (Ballymoe F.C.)
