Roscommon & District League secure point

Oscar Traynor Cup   Roscommon & District League 2 Inishowen League   2 The Roscommon & District League representative side secured their first point in this season’s Oscar Traynor Cup competition when they drew 2-2 at home to the Inishowen league.      Conditions were ideal at the Skyvalley Rovers’ ground at Taughmaconnell and both teams provided plenty of entertainment for the home supporters. The Roscommon & District League can be proud of their display against a physically stronger side and can look forward to the upcoming games against the Mayo, Donegal and Galway Leagues.   The game started at a high tempo and with just three minutes played Garry Egan with a well-struck free-kick forced the Inishowen ‘keeper Gerard Crossan into a good save.   A few minutes later the hard-working Jimmy Mannion from Castlerea Celtic created an opening for Edimielson but he had to really stretch to make contact and the visitors’ ‘keeper saved.   The Inishowen League’s first attack yielded a penalty kick when their big striker Charlie McCormack was fouled. However Brian Treacy fired the spot-kick outside the post. As the half wore on the Ballymoe man Ger McDonnell, Darragh Concannon from Ballinasloe Town, David Fitzpatrick and Ronan Curran from Castlerea Celtic played some lovely football and had the Inishowen defence in all kinds of trouble. With thirty two minutes played the Brazilian Edimielson who plays for Lisnamult Celtic had a brilliant strike from the edge of the Inishowen penalty area but somehow the visiting ‘keeper got his fingers to the ball and deflected it over the bar.    In the closing stages of the half the home ‘keeper Benny Lynch from Skyvalley Rovers pulled of two excellent saves to deny McCormack and Michael Feeney.   The second half started fairly even and it was fifteen minutes old before the Roscommon & District League finally broke the deadlock. First their ‘keeper Benny Lynch pulled off a good save to deny Nigel McMonagle. His long delivery reached the Dysart player James Coyne who set Ronan Curran in on goal. The Castlerea Celtic player kept his cool before beating the advancing keeper.   Unfortunately for the home side their lead was short-lived as within two minutes Michael Feeney’s cross was headed to the home net by the tall substitute Niall McDaid.   With eighty-two minutes gone Roscommon & District League were ahead. The Moore Utd. player and team captain Paul Kelly cleared under pressure to substitute Conor McSharry and he laid the ball off to Ronan Curran who picked out Darragh Concannon with a neat pass.   Concannon rifled the ball past the Inishowen Keeper from the edge of the box.    A tiring Roscommon & District League thought they had done enough but were caught cold with two minutes left to play. A fine cross from the right wing picked out Stephen Harken and while Benny Lynch made an excellent stop the ball ran loose to Charlie McCormack and he knocked the ball into the net from close range. Niall Corbett and Ger McDonnell came close to getting a winner in the closing minutes but the game finished level at two each.    Next up for the Roscommon & District League is a visit to Mile Bush Castlebar and a meeting with the Mayo League. With two teams to qualify manager Gerry Lennon and assistant Noel Galvin are confident of advancing to the knock-out stages.
