Seamus Duke Work on the long-awaited refurbishment of Rooskey bridge will begin in March 2009 a meeting of Leitrim County Council was told on Monday of this week. The work will see the bridge being widened and footpaths being provided on each side of the widened bridge. The news has been welcomed by Leitrim Fianna Fail Cllr. Sean McGowan who told The Roscommon People on Wednesday that this long-awaited work on this dangerous bridge is badly needed. ‘We were hoping that work could start this year but we got an assurance on Monday that the work would start in March 2009 and would be completed by October 2009, which is acceptable. There has been €350,000 set aside for this purpose in both Leitrim and Roscommon and this work is so badly needed. ‘I am also glad that we got an assurance that the bridge would be kept open during the refurbishment work, which is a major bonus because a diversion would cause major disruption in the local area. So it should work out fine for all concerned. I wholeheartedly welcome this news and hopefully by the end of next year all the work will be done’ he concluded.
