Road is one of worst in Ireland, says Beirne

The N61 stretch road between Boyle and Roscommon ‘must be the worst road between any two principal towns in the whole of Ireland’.   That was the view of Fine Gael’s Cllr. Sean Beirne as expressed at this week’s Roscommon County meeting during a discussion on the capital programme for the county 2007-2009.   ‘There has been a few bits and pieces done with that road but you could say that nothing major has changed on that road in 25 years. It’s a disgrace to have that road going in to our county town’ he said.    ‘It’s just another piece of evidence that Roscommon is being ignored by the Government – look at the North West Water supply Scheme – it will never be sorted out as far as I can see because we have no minister here in Roscommon, and that’s a fact’.   In reply, Acting Director of Services Mr. John O’Rourke said the Boyle to Roscommon Road was in the Council’s five-year roads plan.   ‘We are very hopeful that we can get funding to widen that road between Fourmilehouse and Tulsk and we know that land is available to carry out that work’ concluded Mr. O’Rourke.
