Reuse Month with Roscommon County Council

Naughten to launch Repair and Reuse Directory on Friday

Reuse Month in County Roscommon was launched by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Tony Ward at St. Michael’s National School, Castlerea. The school won a new competition run by Roscommon County Council for the ‘Most Creative Use of Waste in a School Garden’ as they are huge inspiration of how to use waste items to great effect in outdoor areas.

The launch of the Repair and Reuse Directory for County Roscommon by Minister Denis Naughten will take place in the foyer of Aras an Chontae on Friday, 14th of October at 1 pm.

The idea of the Repair and Reuse Directory is to enable people to know who is available locally that can repair items or options for reuse in an effort to encourage people to repair or reuse items rather than throw them away.

There will be a Business Showcase featuring a selection of Repair and Reuse businesses at the event. Members of the public are invited to attend this event.

Roscommon County Council wishes to support and expand the existing repair economy in County Roscommon as this is a growing sector offering opportunities for local employment.

Suzanne Dempsey, Environmental Education Officer, Roscommon County Council, who has compiled the directory, states that “repairing and reusing products is not only good for the environment as it saves resources and prevents waste but it is also good for the local economy as jobs in the repair industry tend to be local.”

The first edition of the Repair & Reuse Directory will be printed into a booklet and be made available to the public in our libraries, distributed through local community groups such as Tidy Towns and be available on the Roscommon County Council website.

To celebrate this launch, Roscommon County Council is sponsoring Reuse Workshops for community groups on Friday, 14th of October. Ballintubber Tidy Towns are hosting a Make and Take workshop at 9.30 am in the ‘old schoolhouse’ on homewares for reused materials such as peg bags, remote control holders, table runners. Ballyleague Tidy Towns and Cloontuskert Tidy Towns are holding a joint Bicycle Servicing and Maintenance Workshop from Rediscover Cycle in Ballyleague Hall at 11 am on Friday, 14th of October.
