Refurbishment works to begin at Castlerea Swimming Pool

Works on the refurbishment of Castlerea Outdoor Swimming Pool are due to begin within the next two weeks in the hope of reopening the facility earlier than usual this summer.

Local councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice has said contracts have been awarded on works, which include the refurbishment of surfaces, a retiling of the pool, a new slide, as well as new seating and sheltered areas.

“This is a good news story for Castlerea, and the work, which will be a major job, will begin in the next two weeks,” he said.

“The pool normally opens in mid-June but I will be pushing to get it opened a little earlier this year. It was very well supported last year with record crowds. It was certainly the busiest I’ve seen it in many years”.

The Fianna Fáil councillor and local businessman said it was heartening to see so many visitors coming to the town last summer.

“There were people on their holidays coming to use the pool last year, and visitors from as far away as the UK. It’s great to see that Castlerea Outdoor Pool was on the wish list of people passing through Roscommon as well as those visiting the county,” he said.

“These latest works are positive news for the town and will only encourage more people to use the pool this summer”.
