Members of Roscommon County Board are currently in talks to avoid the cancellation of this weekend’s entire programme of GAA matches after it was decided that referees were going to withdraw their services.
The decision was made after a meeting was held between referee representatives and Roscommon County Board on Thursday night.
The referee strike comes after an alleged assault on a referee during a minor football game on Wednesday evening in Ballyforan, between St. Aidan’s and St. Dominic’s where the official was subsequently hospitalised. Both the Competitions Control Committee and An Garda Síochána have launched their own investigations into the incident.
If referees withdraw their services it will mean that all GAA games in the county will be postponed this weekend, including the final round of games in the senior, intermediate and junior A football championships.
The Roscommon County Board are due to make a statement on the matter later today.
