Business experts gathered in the Hodson Bay Hotel on Thursday morning last for a budget breakfast organised by Russell Brennan Keane accountants. It was a packed house and among the speakers who provided a overview of the economic implications of the budget were: Pat McArdle Chief Economist, Ulster Bank, Cathal Melia, Audit Director, Russell Brennan Keane and Fiona Molloy, Tax Director, Russell Brennan Keane. The verdict ‘As in any time of change, some advantage is always there for those canny enough to see the change and adapt their business in time’ – Mairead O’Grady. ‘This is a mildly expansionary budget underpinned by a sustainable and appropriate level of borrowing’ – Chambers Ireland Chief Executive John Dunne ‘In Athlone, we particularly welcome the commitment to capital expenditure which is a key priority for the town being part of the gateway triangle and critical as the town grows and expands. The completion of the N6 motorway which the Minister mentioned in his budget speech is crucial to Athlone and we welcome this. It is very disappointing that the rail line between Mullingar and Athlone is not in any of the national development or transport plans as part of that capital expenditure. We will continue to try to find a budget appropriate to fund it, but the commitment to the road infrastructure for the region is very welcome.’ – Siobhan Bigley, Chief Executive, Athlone Chamber.
