Pulling no punches! Lisa…in her own words

Dan Dooner of the Roscommon People caught up with world champion Lisa O’Rourke on Wednesday. Here’s Lisa’s on…

That winning feeling…

Aw…I don’t even know if I have words to describe it. I’ve always dreamt of it (winning a world title) but didn’t think it would happen so soon. I was very emotional after it…it’s just unbelievable.

Life as a world champion…

It probably hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest. Going into my first elite championships I wasn’t expecting to medal. When we landed in the town and saw the support…they really know how to throw a party! It really does show how much support there is for us at home. I hope everyone knows how much we appreciate it. There have been so many text messages and I can’t get back to everyone but I’m really grateful for all that support.

Media duties or working on the bog?

(Laughs) I think dad regrets not giving out the Eircode on Saturday! Thankfully, the weather hasn’t been on his side so there’s been no bog this week. I’m not for talking though so I’d be happy enough in the bog. We don’t like to make a big fuss and we’re not really ones for the spotlight. We wouldn’t be running to do the interviews but we know it’s something that comes with reaching this level.

European and World success…

I went to the U-22 Europeans in Croatia and I was aiming to be on top of the podium. I missed out on going to them last year and I went to Tokyo with Aoife for her training camp. That was an unbelievable experience. Going into the European Championships (in March) I wanted a medal at least and I got one (gold) but I never thought I’d have more success so soon! It’s just unbelievable”.

That phone call from Katie Taylor…

“My head coach Zaur (Antia) handed me the phone and I didn’t know who to expect (on the other end). I knew her (Katie’s) voice straight away. She’s just some woman. She’s an eye-opener for every young girl…she’s just top class. To hear her saying congratulations to me was just a dream come true. It was the icing on the cake of the day”.

Winning $100,000 in prize money…

I won’t be making any wish-lists just yet because we might be waiting a while to receive that. It definitely is a bonus but we’d still be there fighting without it and hoping to bring home the gold medal.

Returning to Gaelic football…

“It’s incredible to be part of the Roscommon Ladies; they’re a great bunch of girls, no more than my Castlerea St. Kevin’s girls! I can’t wait to get back playing. We’ve Kildare on the 5th of June and I can’t wait to get on the pitch again and also looking forward to getting back with the club”.

The future…

Myself and Aoife have always said it’s not worth getting in the ring with family members (for an Olympics place at middleweight division)…and mam wouldn’t allow it anyway! I would consider dropping to the weight below me definitely…but I won’t be rushing into anything just yet.
