Public meeting on future of hospital

A public meeting on the future of Roscommon County Hospital will be held on Monday night next, May 12th, in the Abbey Hotel, at 8 pm.  The public meeting will be hosted by Roscommon Hospital Action Committee, which will outline exactly what is in the Health Service Executive briefing document. This will be followed by a discussion from the floor, following which a decision will be made on how to move forward. The Roscommon Hospital Action Committee urges people to again come out to the meeting and listen to the exact proposals and have a say in the future of services in Roscommon County Hospital. A spokesperson for the HAC said this week, ‘The recent briefing document issued by the Health Services Executive (HSE) states that joint departments of surgery and anaesthetics between Roscommon County Hospital and Portiuncula Hospital are planned, with reduced weekend and night cover in Roscommon County Hospital. In effect this is a reduction or a downgrading of services at Roscommon County Hospital. Instead of having our two-in-one rota (two consultants rotating their nights and weekends on) it is proposed that we will have a three-in-one rota with a Surgical Registrar which is a non-consultant doctor, where three surgical registrars rotate their nights and weekends. ‘Unfortunately it looks from the document that the Hospital Action Committee’s biggest fears have been proven right. Any withdrawal of acute surgery will threaten the lives of people in this area. In turn, even though the HSE is stating that 24 hour emergency cover will be available in Roscommon, this 24 hour service will be threatened with reduction as has happened in Monaghan where ultimately they were left with a nurse-led unit in their A&E department. If you think retaining acute services at Roscommon is important for you, your family and this area come along to the public meeting and lend your support.’
