Project welcoming Syrian refugees wins top prize at Foróige Awards

The Aldi Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards took place in Citywest Hotel & Conference Centre on Saturday, 29th of April, where over 2,300 young people from throughout Ireland showcased their work in the community. Ballaghaderreen Foróige Club from Roscommon took the top prize at the Awards for their project welcoming Syrian teenagers to their area; they also won one of the best display prizes.

On discovering that seven of the eighty Syrian refugees resettled in Ballaghaderreen are teenagers, this group decided to welcome their peers to the town and undertook a series of welcome actions for their new neighbours.

Loughglynn Foróige Club, Co. Roscommon also participated in the Youth Citizenship Awards and won a prize for best display. The group organised a Winter Wonderland to raise funds for much-needed sports equipment in the school.
