Senator Frank Feighan has confirmed that representatives from the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dún Laoghaire met Roscommon Hospital management recently to progress the €7.85m Medical Rehabilitation Unit planned for the hospital.
“I understand that the NRH representatives travelled to Roscommon Hospital to progress the design aspect of the project, which will see a stand-alone ten-bed facility built on the hospital grounds.
“I believe the aim is that the design contract will go out to tender in April.
“The NRH in Dún Laoghaire is the only comprehensive rehabilitation facility in the Republic of Ireland for patients with physical and cognitive impairments. The unit in Roscommon will operate as a satellite centre under the auspices of the NRH.
“Currently, there are no dedicated rehab units in the West and this stand-alone Rehab Unit at Roscommon Hospital will relieve pressure on existing services and waiting times in Dún Laoghaire and will also allow patients to be treated in their own community. It is also important to note that 50 jobs will be created when the unit is up and running.”
