Prepare to vibrate

Handball clubs, car showrooms, the Central Bar and Roscommon Farmers Market will all be venues for a contemporary dance festival which is coming to Roscommon from Thursday May 15th to Sunday May 18th 2008. Shoppers and dance audiences in the town will encounter some of the best national and international dance companies in the most unusual of locations as part of the Vibrate Dance Festival. The festival is designed to give newcomers an opportunity to take a look at dance as they’ve never seen it before, or for fans of contemporary dance to gorge themselves on a full weekend of amazing material at a ridiculously low price – a full weekend of performances and workshops for only €15! As well as performances in Roscommon Arts Centre, which includes the internationally renowned Scottish Dance Company, dance companies will be performing in locations as diverse as the park, the farmers market, Keane’s Car showroom, the Central Bar, St. Coman’s Handball Club and even a bit in the Bank of Ireland. As well as performances, there are also workshops in Roscommon Arts Centre over the weekend as well. The festival, now in its third successful year is organised by Roscommon and Westmeath County Council Arts Offices and Westmeath Sports Partnerships in association with Dance Ireland and the Arts Council to increase the profile of contemporary dance and to encourage the participation in dance among the community. Vibrate Dance Festival follows on from Niamh Condron’s residency in Athlone in 2005 and 2006 which aimed to increase the profile of contemporary dance and to encourage the participation in dance among young people. Niamh Condron, artistic director of Vibrate Dance Festival has been working with the Vibrate programme since 2005. The programme involves an interactive collaboration and partnership between Westmeath and Roscommon County Council Arts Offices and Westmeath Sports Partnership, who devised a programme for the development of contemporary dance in the greater Athlone and South Roscommon region. The festival includes site-specific work in various unconventional performance spaces throughout Roscommon town in order to maximize public interaction with and appreciation of contemporary dance. The festival features performances by companies such as Myriad Dance; Ríonach Ní Néill; Catherine Donnelly; Scottish Dance Theatre; Croi Glan Integrated Dance; Niamh Condron and Julyen Hamilton; Open Podium / Giacomo Calabrese; Mary Nunan and Michael McLoughlin; Athlone Dance Company; Buíon Dance Collective; Charlie Morrissey; Laura Murphy.
