Premium calls costing parents

An outright ban on all competition and premium rate telephone numbers is being sought by IFA Telecom this week.             The telecom company called for the banning of all such numbers which do not provide a valuable service to the general public, following recent overcharging incidents. IFA Telecom Director Pat Smith said that most of the premium rate numbers have totally exorbitant call costs and almost always provided little else but huge profit for the operators.               For example, he questioned why media companies should charge premium prices to the public entering competitions or voting for their favourite act on a TV show. Mr Smith said ‘Many parents have suffered huge financial loss as a result of family members calling these worthless services.’
