Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy took the opportunity to praise Castlerea boxer Aoife O’Rourke when addressing the Seanad last week.
Senator Murphy was speaking following Aoife’s gold medal win at the EUBC Women’s European Boxing Championships in Montenegro last month.
“It is so brilliant to have such a sports star in our region and I know many young people look up to Aoife’s wonderful sporting enthusiasm,” he said.
“It is not all about winning with Aoife but all about competing on a world stage, representing Ireland and Castlerea. This is truly a great time for Roscommon sport and once again Aoife is leading the way”.
In his Seanad speech, Senator Murphy again praised Aoife and her teammates, who between them brought seven medals back from Montenegro, and his comments were strongly endorsed by Senator Regina Doherty.
