Approximately 840 women have received care at Portiuncula University Hospital’s Maternity Day Assessment Unit since it opened in September 2025.
The dedicated service assesses pregnancy-related concerns from 20 weeks’ gestation through to 42 days after birth.
Staff provide assessment, monitoring and treatment for concerns including reduced foetal movements, abdominal pain, symptoms of early labour, raised blood pressure and postnatal difficulties.
The unit is managed by a Clinical Midwife Manager and staffed by three senior midwives. Women are referred to the obstetric team where appropriate.
Referrals can come from women themselves, GPs, antenatal clinics and other hospital services.
The hospital says the unit helps women receive care in an appropriate setting while reducing attendance through the labour ward and emergency department.
Patient Gillian Harte, from Eyrecourt, said attending regularly for monitoring and treatment without needing admission made a difficult period easier for her.
