Pettit’s goal vital

Connacht Colleges Senior Football C Final St. Aloysius College, Athlone             1-5 St. Marys, Ballisodare                        0-5 A goal from Graham Pettit half-way through the first half was the key score as St. Aloysius College, Athlone won the Connacht colleges C title in very heavy conditions at Charlestown last Thursday afternoon.   With several Roscommon players on board, Aloysius’ were the stronger team throughout but they were made to fight all the way by a resilient Ballisodare side in a game that was well contested but dour for the most part with defences being on top.   Ballisodare openined the scoring with a 9th minute point but Darragh Lennon had Aloysius level with a free two minutes later and the same two players exchanged further points before Pettit’s goal in the 17th minute when he pulled first time to the Ballisodare net after a long ball from Robbie Egan.   Aloysius led by three points 1-2 to 0-2 at half-time and it was Ballisodare who started the second half the better. James Clarke scored a fine point for them but Lennon was on song with frees and he and Harris exchanged further pooints but Aloysius held on to thier lead and in injury-time Darragh Lennon claimed their first point from play to set the seal on a famous win for the Athlone college.
