Evans quits as clubs revolt

John Evans has dramatically quit as manager of the Roscommon senior football team after clubs rebelled against his proposed reappointment.

In a statement issued to the Roscommon People on Wednesday evening Mr. Evans said that he was – with regret – withdrawing his name from last night’s County Board meeting.

Earlier in the week the County Board executive had confirmed that they were recommending that Mr. Evans be reappointed as manager at Wednesday night’s meeting.

However it became clear over recent days that a majority of clubs in the county were preparing to oppose his nomination due to their disquiet over Roscommon’s disapp

ointing championship exploits this season. The County Board executive engaged in frantic behind-the-scenes lobbying of club delegates but by Wednesday morning, the writing was on the wall and Evans’ fate was sealed.

In a statement, the County Board executive thanked John Evans for his services to Roscommon football.
