Agri Aware’s Farm Walk & Talk series saw just over 480 secondary school students attend Mountbellew Agricultural College in Co. Galway on Thursday and Friday last, March 5th and 6th.
484 agricultural science students, across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, entered the gates of the agricultural college to hear from college staff and patrons of Agri Aware on a number of areas of the Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science curriculum.
Talks focused on soil health, dairy production, suckler beef production, sheep production, machinery, low emission slurry spreading technology and on the Individual Investigate Study project. Talks were delivered by college staff and Agri Aware patrons Aurivo, Dawn Meats and ICBF and Agri Aware Education Officers.
Farm Walk & Talk is now in its 17th year, offering students studying Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science a hands-on practical experience of the curriculum thanks to the support of the event partners the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board, Teagasc, the Irish Farmers Journal and the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.
Speaking after the event, Agri Aware Chair Shay Galvin said: “Thanks to Mountbellew Agricultural College, its staff and our patrons Aurivo, Dawn Meats and ICBF for delivering excellent talks and demonstrations over the two days. There was a great atmosphere around the college farm, with both speakers and students creating an electric learning environment. We look forward to continuing to deliver talks this coming week, where we are expecting to exceed 4,000 students in attendance across the entire series.”
