Our Guide to looking your best this summer!

Ensure your body is at its best this summer As midsummer approaches, now is the time to ensure that you look your best for the summer season ahead. Advertisers in this week’s feature will ensure that your body is the glowing temple of perfection which you always knew it could be during the long hazy days of summer.  If the very thought of exposing your svelte skin to the sun is enough to paralyse you, don’t fret, there’s lots you can do to ensure your skin is looking its best for what is our favourite season. There’s still lots of time to get in shape and ensure that you can don your swimwear with confidence. Here are some top tips to get you that perfect look for the summer season. The first change to make is to start doing 45 minutes of resistance training three days a week. Pick your days and your preferred type of training. It can be done at home with simple but effective exercises like push-ups, chin-ups, squats, lunges, resistance ball or band work. The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Balance some cardio work with resistance training to achieve the best results.  Eat sensibly Most of us eat meals that are too big. Eating small meals throughout the day helps to speed up your metabolism. So instead of skipping breakfast and having a huge lunch and calorie-filled dinner, switch that up to three smaller meals and two snacks, to be eaten throughout the day. Eating every two to three hours speeds up your metabolism and this will eventually help to change your body type. Don’t finish what’s on the plate. Eat until you are satisfied, not totally full. If your body can’t break it down, it gets stored in your stomach and is eventually turned to fat. Don’t skip meals Missing a meal can be as bad as eating an unhealthy meal. When you miss a meal, your metabolism slows down, and if you want to be a beach babe, you have to make time for every meal. If breakfast is something you don’t quite make, then get your hands on a protein shake or a yoghurt drink as an on-the-go meal. Change Once your body gets used to a particular routine, it won’t be as effective as when you started out, so up the ante along the way. To continue burning calories and create lean muscle, you need to change the programme and increase the intensity of your workouts.  Be consistent Consistency is the key to achieving results. If you stick to a diet three days out of the seven, don’t be surprised if you don’t see results. Even one cheat day is not allowed, especially in the early days when your body is adjusting to the new lifestyle. Drink water It’s an obvious one, but one that many people neglect. Keeping your body well hydrated helps flush toxins out of your system and prevents water retention. Your body will retain water when it doesn’t get enough. You also save a lot of calories if you’re drinking water rather than juice or pop. Stretch Stretching is important to ensure that you have that shape required for the sand. Stretching helps repairs tiny tears caused by resistance training. It puts your body back into alignment after a workout and helps lengthen muscles and ligaments. Think Pilates, think yoga, think long, lithe limbs. Don’t stress Summer is a time to be enjoyed, it’s not all about physical labour. Doing something to reduce your stress and curb anxiety will help you reach your goals. Stress allows the body to produce cortisol, a hormone that hinders fat burning. Try breathing exercises, meditation or going for a walk when you’re stressed. Trendy styles for summer at Indigo Europe’s trendiest styles are available at Indigo, Harrison Centre, Roscommon, thanks to local young entrepreneur, Siobhán Somers. Siobhán established the new boutique Indigo which aims to cater for women aged 18 – 35, with lots of emphasis on trendy clothes for bigger sizes. Although she may be in her early 20s, Siobhán is no stranger to the fashion business, as her mother Josephine owns Wide Variety in Harrison Centre and it was there that Siobhán learned her trade.  ‘We stock jeans, casual stuff, and lots of shirts and sweatshirts. There are lots of summer tops at the moment and we have a small bit of dressy wear and bodices. We mainly cater for an age range of 20 – 35, but have lots to suit people outside that range. One of the most popular brands in Indigo is German brand ‘Veto’. Jensen is another brand from the same company, another label that’s proving very popular. Another German brand stocked at Indigo is ‘B2’. ‘Simple Wish’ is a Danish brand which is to be found in Indigo, while many local shoppers will already be familiar with Byoung. ‘They will have a lot of dressier stuff in the winter, strap tops and smart coat jackets. There’s really nice stretch jeans there from them as well.’ ‘Head over Heels’ is a brand that stocks sizes from 16 to 26 and the range includes tops, linen skirts and jackets, all of which are available in Siobhan’s store.  Indigo is open from 10 am to 6 pm Monday to Thursday and from 10 am to 6.30 pm on Friday and Saturday. Beach body bootcamp The annual summer panic for the body beautiful is well underway. However, you’ll be glad to learn that you don’t have to take up residence under a sunbed to achieve a toned, tanned, beach-ready body. So get drinking water – lots of it – to help flush out toxins, and avoid tea and coffee, which can make circulation sluggish. Dry body brush every day using long, sweeping strokes, starting from the feet upwards and always towards the heart. This aids circulation and is the key to ridding the body of toxins that can make cellulite appear worse. Follow this with a good body scrub in the shower in circular motions, then apply a light moisturiser, working up the leg towards the lymph nodes. This will stimulate the blood flow again. Fake tan not only makes you feel sun-kissed and healthy, but helps you disguise cellulite, making you feel even more body confident. Lose the pasty limbs without stepping out into the sun’s harmful rays with a good fake tan. To achieve the best results, preparation is essential. Exfoliate all over, paying special attention to the driest areas of the skin – heels, elbows and knees. A good body scrub, applied to dry skin, will take away dead cells, leaving a smooth and soft base. When applying fake tan, make sure the room is well lit to avoid missing areas which could result in streaks. Start on the largest area first, for example the middle part of your thigh, and work outwards, being careful when applying to toes and hands. The best way to prevent patchiness is to apply more moisturiser to these areas. Get the tanned look in a safe manner this summer with the help of top names such as Fake Bake, Egypt Wonder, Lancome or Maybelline. If you opt for Fake Bake self-tanning lotion at O’Brien’s, you can avail of a buy one, get one free offer which is running at the moment. Egypt Wonder Quiktan is suitable for face and body and proves popular with many Roscommon customers on account of its reliable results. Another reliable product when it comes to getting a safe and effective tan is Lancome Star Bronzer. It’s a transfer-resistant smoothing instant bronzer. Maybelline dream sunglow is the perfect instant summer make-up for face and body. When you’re on holiday, use a tan accelerator cream to boost your natural melanin levels before you hit the beach. Once you’ve reached that elusive golden goddess status, accelerators can also help you prolong your tan. You’ll need to apply them for at least one to two weeks before sun exposure for the best bronzed results. The new range of Greenland body products is now available at O’Brien’s and another range which should be checked out is the Jose Eisenberg range. It includes cleansing make up removing cream, restructuring fluid cream and intensive moisturising milk. Telephone O’Brien’s on (090) 66 26252.
