O’Rourke sisters to be given Freedom of Roscommon

Roscommon sisters and boxing champions, Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke will be awarded the Freedom of Roscommon in honour of their recent accomplishments at a special event on December 8th.

Lisa won the IABA Women’s World Championships in Istanbul in May of this year while Aoife won her second European title at the EUBC Women’s European Championships in Montenegro last month.

At the October meeting of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice proposed that like her sister Lisa, Aoife should receive the freedom of the county. That proposal received unanimous support across the Chamber.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice confirmed that both sisters would be awarded with the Freedom of Roscommon at a special event on December 8th, describing it as “a fitting honour for their outstanding achievements in boxing”.

The O’Rourke sisters will join the likes of former Irish President Mary McAleese, the late, great Dermot Earley, actor Chris O’Dowd, singer Brendan Shine and artist Brian O’Doherty in receiving the honour.
