Oran withstand a late rally from Tremane

Kepak Roscommon SHC Play-Off Final
Oran 2-14 Tremane 0-14

Oran were always in control of this play-off at Athleague on Saturday evening but they still had to withstand a late rally from a spirited Tremane before booking their semi-final place.

With Cathal Kenny, Michael Dwyer and Hugh Rooney in top form Oran led by six points at half-time, 1-8 to 0-5.

Indeed that margin could have been even greater as Oran shot 11 wides in that opening half. Cathal Kenny fired home the Oran goal after good work from Hugh Rooney.

But Tremane, for whom Niall Kilroy was playing well, came back in the third quarter – but just when they looked like they might make a serious challenge, Cathal Kenny struck for goal number two.

Undaunted, Tremane were improving and they clawed their way back into the game. Kilroy’s free-taking and excellent play from Niall Keenan and Michael Keaveney saw them back in business and with six minutes left to play the margin was down to two points.

Now Oran stepped up to the mark to finish strongly. Jerry Fallon clipped over three late frees and Cathal Kenny finished the scoring with a fine point from play.

Oran were slightly the better team and their superior finishing power saw them across the line and into the last four.
