Oran win U-16 thriller

Supervalu U-16 Division Three Football Final Oran ………………. 2-9 (15) Kilglass ………….. 4-2 (14) Oran overcame a gallant Kilglass Gaels team in Tulsk last Friday evening to win the County Division 3 title. In a match played on a beautiful summer’s evening, Oran came from seven points down at one stage to record a famous victory.   Oran scored first with a point from David McDermott but Kilglass took over completely then and they rattled in three great goals from Leo Cox, Darragh Reynolds and Gavin Tully and even at that early stage it looked like the title was heading for Kilglass.   However the Oran management team made some switches and the game began to turn in their favour. Gavin Keane and Thomas Curley were playing well now and Curley kicked a fantastic point to lift his team shortly afterwards. The same player then scored a fine goal and when David McDermott scored two points before half-time, there was only one point in it at the break. Kilglass 3-0 Oran 1-5.   Kilglass were quickest out of the traps after the break and Leo Cox scored a good point for them. But Oran were soon level as Michael Gunning pointed a a free and David McDermott equalised.   It was nip and tuck now and Oran sub Jo Jo McNamara was the goalscorer half-way through, drilling the ball into the Kilglass net. Three minutes before the finish Michael Gunning scored a fine point to put Oran four up but it was not over yet and Kilglass scored a late, late goal through Daniel Duffy. However the clock had beaten Kilglass and Oran were victorious.   It was a great game of football. Man of the match award went to Kilglass player Cathal Beirne. Oran were captained by Dermot Corcoran who received the shield from Roscommon minor board chairman Brendan Cregg.
