The first ever Roscommon Fringe Festival has something for everyone. The festival takes place from Friday, August 10 th to Sunday, August 12 th and activities organised encompass visual arts, environmental activities, food events, dance, music and other cultural forms. For the environmental enthusiast there is a Bat Walk, the ‘On yer Bike’ cycle, and a walk around the beautiful Sunflower Organic Gardens at Art Lane Studios at Antogher Road. Visual Arts feature throughout the Festival with interesting sculpture pieces made from found objects and both professional and amateur artists exhibiting paintings and sketches etc. For those who love to explore traditional food, dance, music and other art forms from different cultures, this festival has it covered. Catch some early atmosphere and sample the delights of the inter-cultural food exchange at the Farmers’ Market on Friday 10th from 11 am to 2 pm. Mayor of Roscommon, John Kelly, will officially open the Festival on Friday 10th August with an exhibition of local artists’ work in the old AIB building at 7 pm. Following the opening, meet to explore the bats of Roscommon Castle at 8.30 pm. Saturday 11th concentrates on workshops such as African dance, drumming, capoeira, kite-making, world food, drama, art and sculpture. Workshops are free for children and €5/€2.50 for adults. Move your feet to the world beat on Saturday night with world music djs Pedro and Barra in Mac’s Bar. Re-cycle your bike on Sunday afternoon and join us at 2 pm for the ‘On yer Bike’ cycle around Roscommon town. From 3 pm at Art Lane Studios this is your opportunity to experience all Roscommon has to offer in terms of world dance, art, and performance. Bring along your favourite food and share at the multi-cultural picnic. Then join the ceilí mór to end the Festival on high jinks!! Don’t let the weather put you off!
