O’Mahony welcomes new Garda Immigration Unit for Knock Airport

Ireland West Airport, Knock is to get its own full-time Garda Immigration Unit, a fact welcomed this week by Ballaghaderreen-based TD John O’Mahony. Deputy O’Mahony said that he has campaigned vigorously for the Unit since his election to Dáil Éireann last year. The current situation at the airport is that four members from the Swinford Garda District operate the Immigration Unit between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm. Now, however, the new operation will mean a unit of one Sergeant and seven Garda operating there on a full-time basis. ‘I’m absolutely delighted with this decision,’ said Deputy O’Mahony. ‘It means that there will be a dedicated team working full-time at the airport in an area that is becoming increasingly busy given the growth in business at the airport. I identified this as an extremely important issue last year and I’m delighted that my views on the matter have been shared by the Garda Commissioner, who obviously also recognises the significance of the role that will be played by the Unit. ‘I know too that the airport management will welcome this announcement and it’s another major boost for IWAK. My understanding is that make up of the new Unit will be decided in due course and it is expected that we will see it in operation in the not too distant future.’
