The official opening of Denis McCarthy’s new premises at Elphin Street, Strokestown on Thursday morning last was a sociable affair, as neighbours, friends and family dropped by to wish the town’s newest businessman well. The roadcaster from Shannonside FM was present, with veteran broadcaster Joe Finnegan broadcasting from outside the store. At the official opening Denis was joined by his wife Breda and staff member Ann Daly, who will oversee the furniture side of the business. A native of Cahersiveen in Co. Kerry, Denis spent 25 years in England, working in the construction business in London. For the past 15 years he had a holiday home near Lanesboro, overlooking Elfeet Bay on the Shannon. About five years ago, he made a permanent move back to Ireland, along with his wife Breda and children Liam, Sinead and Aisling. Shortly after his move to Ireland, he purchased the property at Elphin Street. It had been home to a furniture store previously, but much work was done on the building to transform it into a showroom for beautiful furniture. There are four facets to McCarthy’s new business, an auctioneering business, a furniture showroom, sale of garden equipment and furniture and an auction room. Denis has much experience in the world of property and his experience gives him an ideal position to advise local people on the sale and purchase of property, locally, nationally and internationally. ‘We have different properties all over Ireland. We have properties in Kerry, Galway, Dublin and the local area, but our focus is mainly concentrated on the midlands.’ International property is an increasingly popular investment for Irish people and Denis notes that often a good return can be gleaned from overseas investment. ‘The best value at the moment is in America, in Florida. Property prices are coming down in America and there is a drop in the value of the dollar. Spain is still very popular so there is good value out there.’ As part of the Dream Network, Denis has access to a property portfolio which encompasses 16 countries, including Turkey, UK, USA, Spain, Cape Verde, Brazil and Dubai. Property prices range from €45,000 to €20 million Denis aims to have a monthly auction in the auction room and is currently looking for furniture to auction, antique furniture and high quality more modern furniture. ‘We will be inviting people to bring in furniture to us. Once it’s up to a reasonable standard,’ said Denis. Bookings are now being taken for the auction rooms, so pick up the phone and talk to Denis about your requirements. Another aspect to the business is money transfer and McCarthy’s are agents for a worldwide money transfer service.
