O’Brádaigh pays tribute to the late Kathleen Beirne

Tributes have been paid to the late Ms. Kathleen Beirne, Ballymacurley, who passed away last month. Ms. Beirne, who worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon, died suddenly on February 27th. She is survived by her brother Patsy (Ballymacurley) and by her sister Maureen (Galway). The late Ms. Beirne is fondly remembered as a community and political activist who was well-known and respected throughout Roscommon. Ms. Beirne had been secretary of the Seán Sabhat Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin, and was also an enthusiastic patron of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The President of Republican Sinn Féin, Ruairí O’Brádaigh, who served as Sinn Féin TD for Longford-Westmeath from 1957-1961, was among those who paid tribute to her. ‘While Kathleen was a shy and reserved person she had a great love of Ireland and of the Irish people. Beannacht Dé lena h-anam dílis,’ arsa Rúairí O’Brádaigh. Mr. O Brádaigh laid a tricolour-ribboned wreath of fresh flowers on the deceased’s grave at the burial in Oran Cemetery. Other prominent members of Republican Sinn Féin were present at her funeral. Ms. Beirne’s colleagues at the Sacred Heart Hospital formed a guard of honour at the removal to Ballinaheglish Church. May she rest in peace.
