A HSE spokesperson this week told Roscommon People that there are no plans to close beds in Áras Máthair Pól in Castlerea. Fears had been expressed over the future of the Castlerea facility, but a statement issued by the HSE on Wednesday afternoon stated, ‘We strongly reject any suggestion of planned closures at Aras Mathair Phól in Castlerea. This is not the case.’ Fears were also expressed this week that 10 beds in the psychiatric unit at Roscommon County Hospital were set to be closed down as a result of cutbacks in the sector this summer. The fears of the closures at the hospital were raised by Fine Gael Deputy Frank Feighan at the weekend and the claim was repeated at Monday’s meeting of Roscommon County Council by Fine Gael Councillor and new Deputy Mayor Michael Creighton. The HSE have denied that any beds at the psychiatric unit are due for closure but would not say what form any cutbacks in the sector would take. It is expected that the matter will be raised at a meeting between consultants and the Chief Executive of the HSE Professor Brendan Drumm in Galway today (Thursday).
