Castlerea Vehicle Recycling Ladies Intermediate Club Football Final: Padraig Pearses 2-11 Western Gaels 1-6
Pádraig Pearses easily accounted for a fancied Western Gaels to clinch the intermediate title to follow the Junior A title they won a year previously in this enjoyable final at Knockcroghery last Saturday.
It was a great team effort from Pearses, but they can be thankful to young star Heather Payne who turned in a spectacular display throughout and she was a thorn in the Western Gaels’ defence all through the game. It took the Pearses starlet just three minutes to have an impact and she scored a cracking goal to set Pearses on their way.
But the Gaels were back in the game a minute before half-time when Niamh Cafferky scored a goal after Lisa Flynn’s effort struck the crossbar. At half-time, Pearses led by 1-6 to 1-2.
Pearses were again the stronger side on the restart despite playing into the breeze. Western Gaels did not score for almost 28 minutes as Pearses built up a winning lead.
Jenny Downey, Heather Payne and Michelle Ryan added points for the south Roscommon girls to stretch their lead, Martina Freyne’s free in the 58th minute was only the Gaels’ second score of the half. But the game was ended as a contest in injury-time when Heather Payne burst through the Gaels’ defence in typical fashion and off-loaded to Jenny Downey who made no mistake from close range for a clinching goal.
A couple of late points for Western Gaels were of consolation value only. Heather Payne was the deserved player of the game and others to play well for Pearses were Jenny Downey, Aine Galvin, Michelle Ryan and Shauna Finnerty. For a disappointing Western Gaels, Niamh Cafferky, Jenny Higgins and Martina Freyne were most impressive.
