Next move: Local chess and draughts teams prepare for national finals

Young Roscommon competitors enjoyed great success in the Community Games Connacht Finals for Chess and Draughts, which took place in ATU Sligo on July 2nd, with three teams making it to the national stage of the competition.

The U-13 Roscommon chess team (Roscommon/Kilteevan) played against Sligo, and were victorious in all five of their games, making them Connacht champions and securing their place in the national finals. The U-16 Roscommon chess team (Ballinameen/Breedogue) played well against Sligo but came second in the end. There was no competition on the day for the U-10 Roscommon chess team (Roscommon/Kilteevan), who will automatically progress to the national final.

In draughts, the U-14 and U-16 Roscommon teams (Ballinameen/Breedogue and Elphin respectively) played very well, ultimately placing second. The U-10 Elphin draughts team will be progressing to the national final.

The Community Games National Finals for Chess and Draughts will take place on August 27th and 28th at Carlow Arts Centre. Well done and best of luck to all Roscommon teams.
